Shenzhen

China's capital of technology and innovation · a global startup hub · core city of the Greater Bay Area.

In our founder's words
"I love talking with Shenzhen's entrepreneurs. They're open, generous, and completely honest — they'll tell you the holes they fell into, the wrong turns they took, and how they succeeded, holding nothing back. If I set everything else aside, Shenzhen is the city I would choose to build a business. The people and the place are made for it."

Hank, Founder of China Business Travel

Just over 40 years old, Shenzhen is one of the great economic miracles of modern China — a fishing village that became a global centre of technology and innovation. It has few old monuments, but it has the companies changing the world: Huawei, DJI, Tencent, BYD and UBTECH were all born or grew up here. If Guangzhou represents China's trade and commerce, Shenzhen represents the direction of China's future.

A personal connection

My father came to Shenzhen in 1998

"Yesterday you're too poor to afford a bed and sleeping on the floor; tomorrow you're driving a car worth a million. Shenzhen really is a place that changes people's fate."

Shenzhen's entrepreneurs almost all come from somewhere else — from every corner of China. This is the best environment for starting a business in the country, and there are more investment opportunities here than almost anywhere. So many people have changed their lives through sheer effort.

My hometown is Ankang, in Shaanxi. We were poor when I was young. My father came to Shenzhen in 1998 — he was a truck driver, one of the first people to build this city, and it was here that he made his first pot of gold. Back then this was still a poor fishing village.

I've been to many cities and met people from all over, but I especially love talking with Shenzhen's founders. They share honestly, without reservation. That openness is the city's real character.

If I put every other factor aside, I would choose Shenzhen to start my own business. The people here, the environment here — they're built for it.

China speed

From a product design to a full supply chain — in a few hours

In Shenzhen, a product can go from design to R&D to manufacturing with the whole supply chain matched in hours. I've seen it with my own eyes — just a few hours. That is what "China speed" means, and Shenzhen represents it completely. That same industrial cluster now reaches into Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia — but the DNA is still Chinese.

Founder's pick

Shenzhen Bay Park

One of the city's most beautiful views — the bay, the skyline, and Hong Kong across the water. Perfect for an evening walk with your group after a day of meetings.

"This is my favourite. You can see Hong Kong from here — and at night the view is really beautiful."

Beyond business

Where to go in Shenzhen

A young, high-energy city — at 2am the streets are still full of people. A few places worth your evening.

Talent Park

A tribute to the city's spirit of innovation — beautiful lighting after dark.

Ping An Finance Centre

One of Shenzhen's tallest landmarks, with a sweeping view over the whole city.

Huaqiangbei electronics market

The world's densest electronics bazaar — raw components to finished products in a single district.

Window of the World

Shenzhen's famous culture theme park — world landmarks in miniature.

Dapeng Ancient Fortress

One of Shenzhen's rare historical quarters — a different side of the city.

Happy Harbour

A hugely popular waterfront leisure area — a Ferris wheel, sea views and city lights at night.

Eat in Shenzhen

A migrant city, so all of China is on the menu

Shenzhen gathers food from across the country — but a few local specialities are a must.

Cantonese morning tea

Less traditional than Guangzhou, but Shenzhen has excellent Cantonese restaurants — har gow, siu mai, cheung fun, chicken feet.

Hakka salt-baked chicken

Deep Hakka roots around Shenzhen. Founder's favourite — "the authentic version is really, really good."

Chaoshan beef hotpot

Shenzhen has a large Chaoshan population — fresh beef hotpot you have to try.

Stone-milled cheung fun

Founder's tip: if you stay near Hampton by Hilton in Nanshan, the stone-milled cheung fun about 2km away is worth every trip — morning, noon and night.

Fresh seafood

On the coast — head to Dapeng or the Yantian seafood street for the freshest catch.

Shenzhen nightlife

Rich and late — Shenzhen Bay night views, Happy Harbour, Sea World and the Huaqiangbei streets.

"Even people who love Shanghai tell me: Shenzhen is the one city in China you must visit — no exception."

Shenzhen doesn't have Beijing's weight of history or Shanghai's old international quarters. What it has is the fastest growth, the strongest spirit of innovation and the most open startup environment in China — and famously pragmatic people. A boss here might be in a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops in an ordinary coffee shop, discussing a project worth tens of millions. That is Shenzhen's culture. A great business trip isn't only work — it's tasting the food, feeling the city, and understanding what makes it tick.
