My biggest impression of Foshan came on my first trip, drawn by its rich glass-lens industry. There I met a fellow Shaanxi native who had founded a glass-lens factory, and he told me his 30-plus-year story. One detail stayed with me: they are extremely meticulous about production quality — they won't let a single defective piece pass. Once, a batch of our products had small issues — dirty spots on the lenses. To us that was normal, just something to control later. But they insisted on returning it, and gave us an inspection report and a solution. In that moment I decided: this is my strategic supplier.

I should be clear — it's not that we have no standards, or low ones. It's that in our industry, "dirty spots" are a world-class problem; everyone has it, even the world's top brands in our field. Later, working on coffee machines, we cooperated with suppliers nationwide, and we concluded that Foshan, Dongguan and other southern cities are reliable and stable on quality for certain products. Even at a slightly higher price, we would choose to work with them first.

Foshan didn't succeed on capital stories. It succeeded through decades of focus on a single industry. Many owners opened their own factory young, spent every day in the workshop studying products, customers and costs, and grew a small workshop into an enterprise exporting to the world. Foshan entrepreneurs are pragmatic, low-key, long-termist — they may not talk business theory, but they deeply understand products, supply chains, customer needs and cost. That is why Chinese manufacturing keeps moving forward.
